You may have seen photos like the one above that make scenes from the real world look like they’ve been shrunk down to the size of a model railway. Today I stumbled across the work of Keith Loutit, a photographer in Sydney who has combined this effect with time-lapse photography to create videos that make the real world look like an exceptionally detailed stop motion animation.

You Can Do It Too!

The key to making the world look tiny is the very shallow depth of field. Back in the day this effect could only be achieved with very expensive tilt shift lenses with elements that can be tilted and shifted independently so that only part of the photo is in focus. Keith uses a tilt-shift lens but nowadays we can get pretty close with Photoshop so check out this tilt shift Photoshop tutorial to find out how you can shrink your world too.

Check out more of Keith’s videos at http://vimeo.com/keithloutit then have a go yourself and post the results to the Quick Photography Tips Flickr Group pool.
